Machines with minds

As we close out the fourth week of the semester what I took away from this week after viewing all the material is that social media and technology is allowing people to become whatever and whoever they want. This week’s episode of Black Mirror “Be Right Back”, the article on socialmediatoday by Laura Johnson and the youtube video describing the application Replika all showed me this common theme for the week.

“Be Right Back” the first episode of the second season of Black Mirror was another thrilling episode. I did realize that in this series the episodes do start off slow to build the plot, but once the plot is built the episodes have shown to be very interesting and thrilling. So to get started on the episode it begins with a happy couple named Ash and Martha. The episode makes it known that Ash is a delivery driver and Martha is an artist. One day Ash has to make a delivery and Martha does not tag along because she wants to work on a new piece she began. As day becomes night Martha does not hear from Ash and she later learns he passed away during this delivery. Martha is destroyed by this because it is made clear Ash was her soulmate. At his funeral Martha encounters a friend and she shows Martha an application for their smartphone that could help her with her loss. After not wanting to try out the application Martha gives in because she is pregnant and all alone. Martha falls in love with this new program and when she drops her phone one day and cannot speak to this fake Ash she melts down. This makes her come to the realization that speaking on the phone is just not enough. This escalates to her buying a replica of Ash. She now has an addiction that cannot be helped because she misses her partner they were meant for each other. When she realizes that this replica of Ash is not the same she breakdown and almost has it commit suicide. In the end she keeps it in the attic which goes back to the beginning of the episode when Ash was telling Martha about his mother not being able to deal with the death of his brother and stored all his belongings in the attic. This foreshadowed Ash’s faith. Technology is a scary thing. It allows people and things to be something they are not as shown in this episode. Although this replica looked like and sounded like Ash it was not him. It did not have all the things that brought them together the flaws and perfections.

Second is the article by Laura Johnson. The article gives us the differences between social networks and online communities. Although the intentions of both of these categories are for the common good there is some negative things about both of them. I know the article speaks on the perks and good uses of the two, but there is more than just that. It is allowing people to be something they are not on social media. In social networks you can already know somebody and their feed could be completely the opposite of what you know them as. People can post anything and deceive anyone. In online communities this deception can be brought from just sharing the same interest as another. These things are possibly, but there is good brought out from this as well. You can connect to new people and connect with people outside of where you met. In the end there is pros and cons to this just like with the episode for the week. It was painful for Martha to be with this fake artificial Ash, but it still helped her cope with losing her partner.

The youtube video on the program Replika shows ties into both the episode and the article. Replika is a chatbot that creates a digital representation of whatever you want it to be. In the video talks about how Eugenia Kyuda started an early form of Replika by developing a chatbot where she uploaded all her message history with her friend into a network where it created a bot she could interact with in the form of her. This is very similar to how Martha started off in this week’s episode. So after everything we viewed and read for the week it left me with some questions. Is technology going to far? Sooner or later are we going to create something we cannot control?

WEEKLY NEWS: https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/former-model-alleged-assault-trump/2020/09/17/8722c1fc-f92f-11ea-be57-d00bb9bc632d_story.html

The weekly news article I chose was the new sexual assault allegation against Donald Trump. Amy Dorris a former model stated that back in the 90s Trump sexual assaulted her during the US Open tennis tournament. I felt that this was relevant as a weekly news post because with the presidential election right around the corner we have to sit back and make sure that with everything going on right now is this who we really want in the office leading us for another four years. A man who has multiply allegations of assaulting women and from my last week’s news post basically the reason why we are still in the midst of a pandemic?

Do you need fame to have fortune?

After watching and reading everything for this week it left me with the impression that everyone believes nowadays that in order to be rich it has to come from fame. From the video on Youtube about how social media is affecting teens, the Black Mirror episode 15 million merits, and the article “Foucault and social media: I tweet, therefore I become” by Tim Rayner I recognized this common theme.

First, I will begin with the Youtube video. It goes into the minds of teens of this generation and what they aspire to be. They all say famous. A crazy statistic that was mentioned in the video is that this generation has fame listed 4th on what they wanted to become when older, but all other generations had it at 15th. I hate to say it, but I blame this on social media. Social media shows people the success stories of people that made it from going viral or setting trends and never enough of the people that worked day and night and made sacrifices to get to where they wanted to be in life. So I feel that social media is affecting teens negatively. It is making them all chase the fame for fortune and not the what they are passionate about to bring them fortune.

Secondly, the Foucault article. Tim Rayner expresses Foucault’s ideas very descriptively. Foucault’s philosophy I agree with it. He feels that each generation has a different method of constructing themselves. For this generation it is social media. “Foucault’s philosophy can help us overcome the squeamishness we feel about self-creation online.” I agree that social media has become a very vital role in life today, but I also understand why is what this article showed me. Social media when used the right way I believe is necessary to build upon your brand, self or any job. Social media brings it a following and is able to allow the whole world to see. Social media is definitely a “positive tool” but I feel the purpose of it has been lost. individuals are now making it seem like it is the only way to become successful and that brings me to this week’s episode of Black Mirror.

15 million merits was based on meritocracy. It was very far fetched, but the points brought out were not. People are stuck in a world with screens everywhere they go and the only way to survive is riding on a bicycle all day to get merits. The only way to get out of this slave type life is to become the next big thing on a show called Hot Shots. Bing the main character of the episode finds love in a woman name Abi and gives all 15 million of his merits to her to get her a shot on the show. The show was nothing liked they thought when they got there they exploited Abi. She was forced to drink a cuppliance which is a drug that almost make people easier to comply. Bing starves and sacrifices everything to get his way back to the show and expose them for what they are doing. This ultimately made him get an offer to finally get out of this terrible lifestyle people were forced to live. What I got from this episode is how fame always comes with a price. Abi went into the show believing what she saw and so did Bing, but they got a rude awakening when they got there. This goes with life today many famous people say they wanted the fame for the riches, but it is not worth it. The amount of mental damage it does cannot be fixed and you are truly never happy.

WEEKLY NEWS: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-54094559

The news article I chose for this week is about how Trump knew about the dangers of COVID-19 and down played it to the media. It just made me wonder could all this have been avoided? And what is the government really controlling if they almost allowed us to get to this point? In regards to this week’s materials I also ask do you need fame to have fortune?

Is technology ruining lives?

The material brought out this week was very well connected and shared the same theme. The biggest thing that we had watch was this week’s episode of Black Mirror was very interesting and I felt had a strong underlying message. Although the show is filled with way to advanced technology compared to today’s technology I feel it is still sending a message that could be applied to everyone now. The way the world is now is not to far off from the episode then everyone thinks.

This week’s episode “The Entire History of You” strongly represented how social media/technology affects society. The episode is about the “grain”. A device that allows you to record all of your experiences so that you can always replay your memories. With this device in society the episode focuses on a married couple with the characters named Liam and Ffion. I feel because of this device it causes Liam’s life to head for a downward spiral. I also feel that is the underlying message of this episode. Technology is starting to become everyones life which is in reality ruining them. At a gathering Liam sees his wife Ffion flirting with man he had never met. She does tell Liam that she was in a relationship with this man, but expresses it was a very long time ago before them. Liam does not believe her and uses the grain to see if Ffion was being truthful. Although this made Liam begin to obsess over this relationship he was actually right. Ffion did have an affair with this man and to make matters worse it was around the time the two had their daughter. The grain did serve helpful to Liam to confirm that his suspicions were for good reason and he was correct, but this small device drove him into a dark place and uncover things that would have never came to light. In the end, he decides to cut out the device, but his life is already ruined. Liam did deserve to know what his wife did to him, but because he had learned this terrible information from the grain and was able to see it for his own eyes it probably made things way worse for him.

The way society is becoming is scary just watching this episode because it is not so far off as you think. Like Liam obsessed over his wife cheating on him and could not stop reliving the moment in real life people obsess over social media. Social media has become a vital part of peoples everyday life and it is starting to make or break individuals. People will obsess over being the trending topic or other things.

WEEKLY NEWS

Above is an article I saw that relates to the episode we had to watch this week. Elon Musk a successful innovator has come up with a brain chip The implant was tested on pigs and the things he wants this chip to be able to do is actually crazy to think of. With this Neuralink brought to life will it cause the same severity as the grain? Is Black Mirror warning us about the future?
